School’s Open – Please Drive Safely - Students head back to school in Hillsborough County on Monday

August 15, 2008 - The first day of school is quickly approaching and there is no higher priority than the safety of our children. With children returning to school in Hillsborough County on Monday, August 18, the City of Tampa Department of Public Works is urging motorists to be especially cautious and watch for children as they travel to and from school.

Drivers can help protect our children by remembering to be particularly alert near schools and school bus stops. Motorists can help reduce risks to children by following these safety tips:
Obey school zone speed limits – speeding fines are doubled in school zones.
Obey crossing guards, traffic signs and be alert at crosswalks.
Always stop for school buses that are loading and unloading school children.
Come to a complete stop at all “STOP” controlled intersections.
Understand children are unpredictable and inexperienced in traffic.

Let’s make this school year one of the safest by being cautious drivers and teaching our children the important lessons that will help ensure their safety. Remember, slow down in school zones and drive carefully.
